TiengViet Reader is a reading aid for people learning Vietnamese. Paste a text and each syllable is marked with its tone, so you can follow ngang, huyền, sắc, hỏi, ngã and nặng as you read. What the app does: - Marks all six tones with a color and a small pitch contour above each syllable. This runs on your device with no connection. - Handles Vietnamese typed with precomposed or combining accents, and either tone placement (hòa, hoà). - Groups syllables into words using a bundled list of 3,000 common words with short English meanings and frequency ranks. - Tap a word to see its list meaning straight away. With a connection, AI explains it in the sentence you are reading, with part of speech, compounds and an example. - Save words to a Word Bank and export them as tab-separated text you can import into Anki. - Save texts as reading sessions and reopen them later, offline. - Estimates the difficulty of a passage from how many of its syllables are in the 1,000 most common words of the list. It is an estimate, not an official level. - Offers light and dark appearance, and lets you turn the tone annotation off. AI and privacy: When you tap a word, that word and the sentence around it are sent through the app's API gateway to Google Gemini, only to produce the explanation. Avoid pasting private information. Saved words and sessions are stored in the app on your device. There is no account, advertising, analytics or in-app purchase. The internet permission is used only for AI explanations. Good to know: AI explanations can be mistaken, so check important meanings elsewhere. The word list is adapted from English Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0) and does not cover every word. The app shows tones and does not play audio.
